What is the Internet? What is the World Wide Web?

The Internet is a structure made up of a vast number of interconnected computers whose users can communicate with one another and share information. The World Wide Web (WWW) is a system created to allow easy, graphical navigation of the Internet using browser software.

What are browsers? What do they do?

In general, think of a browser as being a window to the World Wide Web. With a browser, the vast world of the Internet is only a few mouse clicks away! In technical terms, a browser is a computer software (program) package that provides users with an easy-to-use graphical system for viewing Web pages and navigating the Web simply by clicking on pictures or text with their mouse.

What do we need to view Web pages?

Currently, there are many Web browsers available, usually free for downloading. By downloading, you are obtaining software from a server onto your computer. Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer are two of the most popular ones. Although they differ slightly in details, most are very similar to each other. Therefore, if you learn how to use one, figuring out how to use another would be easily accomplished. Another great feature about Web browsers is that they are very similar in use whether you are using a Windows-based PC or a Macintosh computer. Although webLearner will only focus on Netscape Communicator, many of the concepts and functions discussed will work similarly for Microsoft Internet Explorer. To fully experience the multimedia capabilities of the Web, it is highly recommended that you alway acquire the latest version of your favorite Web browser.
